Nate Gill – Head Coach

Coach Nate Gill brings 11+ years football coaching experience that includes 6 years of collegiate level coaching to the Desert Vista Thunder family beginning in 2022.

At the beginning of his high school coaching career at Sierra Linda High School, Gill inherited a 25 game losing streak. He was able to achieve a miraculous pivot in the program and lead the team to the most successful season in the school’s history. During his final year as head coach in 2021, the 8-2 season triumph was culminated by a region championship. Gill was named Copper Sky Region Coach of the Year and awarded the Arizona Republic Coach of the Year. Over the last 5 years, Gill achieved historic accomplishments with Sierra Linda’s first 13 football student-athletes to be awarded college scholarships. This included the school’s first 4-year athletic college scholarship with a total of nine 4-year college scholarships over his tenure at Sierra Linda.

Prior to Sierra Linda, Gill coached collegiately at Mayville State University (MSU) for 6 years as the Defensive Backs Coach, Assistant Recruiting Coordinator, Passing Game Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator. During the 2013 season, Gill was the Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach that championed MSU’s top 10 national rankings in eight categories: Defensive Passing Efficiency (1st) Opponent 1st Downs, Opponent 3rd down percentage, Pass Defense, Interceptions, Opponent 3rd down percentage, Points allowed per game and Total Defense per game. During his tenure, MSU achieved 3 national top 10 defenses (total defense per game) and competed in 3 conference championship games. Gill generated 14 All Conference defensive backs for a total of 16 All Conference Players. Gill recruited MSU’s all-time leading rusher, pass catcher and interception leader who became an All-American player. During his tenure, Gill recruited 6 All-American players and coached 3 defensive players who achieved All-American status. Five of these athletes accomplished Academic All-American awards.

Nate Gill is a Mayville State University graduate. During his college career, he was the four-year letter winner for the Comet Football and served as a Senior Captain for MSU. Gill obtained his Masters of Science in Kinesiology from The University of North Dakota. Gill is originally from Houston, Texas and has an affinity for sneakers.
